POSITION FUNCTION:



The Surgical Services Clinical Nurse Educator is a unit based educator with an organizational scope of practice. Working with all appropriate members of the health care team ensures coordination of patient care through the development and use of patient care and practice standards. The role of the Nurse Educator provides education, mentorship, consultation, and role modeling through employee orientation, development, coordination and implementation of a variety of educational programs; assessment, and maintenance of staff competency, and involvement in quality improvement to enhance patient care and outcomes. These activities are implemented within the framework of the Nursing Division’s philosophy, goals and objectives.

Job Description:

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

· Supports staff professional development with activities that include planned and real time educational offerings/support to advance clinical practice, certification, emergency preparedness, TJC requirements, product roll-outs, mentoring, etc.

· Demonstrates a broad and comprehensive knowledge of surgical procedures, instrumentation, equipment and technologies

· Consistently responds to changes in perioperative practice/guidelines and develops programs to support those changes.

· Incorporates principles of adult learning in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of education programs.

· Conducts needs assessments using a variety of strategic tools.

· Design, plan, prepare and present materials for use in educational programs for nursing staff inclusive of competency based learning modules.

· Accessible to clinicians, and puts education plans in place for staff, monitors completion of staff competencies and education programs.

· Ensures staff demonstrates sound critical thinking skills in ongoing practice and is prepared to function effectively and efficiently in emergency/crisis situations.

· Provides educational opportunities that benefit nurses at all stages of their career development

· Supports integration of evidence based best practices and incorporates research into practice and program planning.

· Work collaboratively with education team, managers, interdisciplinary team to support initiatives, central and unit orientation activities and is flexible in meeting needs of the nursing department

· Works effectively with interdisciplinary team, collaborating with educators from other disciplines. Maintains open and effective communication, resolves issues effectively and promotes a positive work environment

· Engages and leads in task force work that enhances patient care, outcomes, and satisfaction.

· Collaborates with Quality and Patient Safety team to advance regulatory initiatives, quality and patient safety.

· Serves as a role model to promote excellence and safety, mentors and models leadership behavior in the professional practice setting

· Maintains knowledge of current (evidence based practice) concepts in perioperative nursing

· Coordinates/provides the orientation of new equipment and procedures to surgical services staff as necessary

· Assists departmental Managers in the evaluation of employee performance

· Maintains professional growth and development through seminars, workshops, professional affiliations, and encourages staff to participate in educational programs.
