Job Summary: The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) serves as a key clinical provider and team member in the treatment and management of the surgical patient in the pre, peri and post-operative setting. This role practices under the direction of the Chief of Surgery and other attending surgeons in a manner consistent with both the Board(s) regulations and hospital policy. Primarily, the APP will cover patients of BID-Needham physicians credentialed in the Department of Surgery. The APP is responsible for the initial assessment and admission of patients; assisting in the evaluation and preparation of patients for surgery; acting as first and second assistant in the operating room; and caring for patients following surgery and helping prepare patients for discharge.Job Description:
Essential Responsibilities:
Performs comprehensive focused history & physical exams on surgical patients admitted through the ED & those held for Observation, initiates appropriate lab, radiology & other tests required for evaluation of illness, and scrutinizes data on patients and hospital admissions to establish a record of the patient's health status & to develop a diagnosis & treatment plan, with direct review by an MD.
Performs and interprets, at least to the point of recognizing deviations from normal, common laboratory, radiologic, cardiographic and other routine diagnostic procedures used to identify pathophysiologic processes, as privileged.
Interprets and correlates subjective and objective data to formulate a differential diagnosis and establishes a working diagnosis
Formulates a treatment plan for medical problems within scope of practice. Writes initial orders in coordination with the attending physician. Implements therapeutic intervention for specific conditions, when appropriate. Educates patients regarding their disease, treatments, related drug and treatment side effects and hazards
Exercises judgment on problems requiring consultation, referral, or evaluation by the supervising surgeon or other health care professionals
Performs routine procedures, managing simple conditions produced by infection or trauma, assisting in the management of more complex illness and injury which may include assisting surgeons in conducting operations and taking initiative in performing evaluation and therapeutic procedures in response to life-threatening situations, as privileged
Performs specialized procedures, including suturing/stapling of major lacerations, wound debridement, blood draws, designated IV starts, central venous line placement, arterial line placement, venous cut downs, foley catheter insertion +/- bladder irrigation, as well as other specific procedures in the Emergency Department and on the inpatient units, with the approved delineation of privileges.
Handles a broad variety of surgical specialty and subspecialty procedures
Participates in on all in-house surgical patients as required, upon arrival for duty and responds to all Codes
Assists Emergency Department physicians in cases of surgical consultation in the Emergency Department within the APP's scope of practice.
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Nurse Practitioner required.
Registration Nurse Practitioner License required., and Certificate 1 Basic Life Support required., and Certificate 2 Advanced Cardiac Life Support required., or a Physician Assistant licensed by the MA Board of Physician Assistants which requires candidates to have passed the National Commission on Certification of PA examination.
0-1 years related work experience required in post graduate experience as a surgical APP (min 1 year required).
Nurse Practitioner candidates must also have RNFA certification.
Demonstrated analytical abilities and strong interpretative skills for integrating information from the patient history, physical exam and diagnostic data to be able to formulate a differential diagnosis and subsequent treatment plan for patients in both elective and emergent situations.
Experience with computer systems required, including web based applications and some Microsoft Office applications which may include Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint or Access.

Knowledge: Ability to demonstrate in-depth knowledge of concepts, practices and policies with the ability to use them in complex varied situations.
Team Work: Ability to act as a team leader for small projects or work groups, creating a collaborative and respectful team environment and improving workflows. Results may impact the operations of one or more departments.
Customer Service: Ability to provide a high level of customer service to patients, visitors, staff and external customers in a professional, service-oriented, respectful manner using skills in active listening and problem solving. Ability to remain calm in stressful situations.

Physical Nature of the Job:
Heavy work: Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or 50 pounds of force frequently. Work is physically demanding and requires extended periods of standing and/or moving.
