Under the supervision of the Preoperative Services leadership team, the OR Tech assists in inpatient care, transports equipment, assists in room turnovers, cleans and mops surgical suites, prepares case supplies and equipment, and restocks rooms. The Support Tech also is responsible for holding extremities for prepping, assisting in patient positioning, and performing errands in a timely manner. Assist the PACU in the transportation of patients and performs errands as needed.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Maintains BLS
  • Assists with moving, positioning, lifting and prepping patients
  • Assists the surgical team with room turn over
  • Coordinates and participates in the cleaning of the operating rooms ensuring minimal delay between surgical procedures.
  • Delivers orders and stocks and maintains supplies for the surgical suite
  • Performs the daily biologicals following standards and documents all pertinent information legibly and accurately
  • Provides assistance to the anesthesia department when needed
  • Complies with JCAHO patient safety goals.
  • Demonstrates telephone etiquette; must demonstrate consistent professional conduct and meticulous attention to detail.
  • Maintains required certifications
  • Demonstrates accountability for reading minutes or attending 100% of staff meetings.
  • Assists Anesthesia with supplies and cleaning of equipment as needed
  • Assists with the orientation and development of new staff members.
  • Maintains temperature logbooks.
  • Refers safety and patient concerns quickly, accurately and objectively to the charge nurse/Clinical Manager.
  • Performs biologic testing of the sterilizers in coordination with the Central Sterile department daily.
  • Interfaces with appropriate hospital staff to ensure a cohesive working relationship in providing patient care serves
  • Follows and utilizes the principles of proper body mechanics.
  • Continually strives to make productive use of time through careful coordination of daily tasks, setting priorities, and reducing non-essential interruptions in order to complete the job during the allocated time.
  • Demonstrates the ability to assess age specific needs to provide care and equipment for specialized techniques used by the anesthesia team.
  • Applies age specific concepts during patient care. (Pediatric vs Adult)
  • Demonstrates the ability to perform work in an accurate and timely manner in periods of increased workload and high stress. Maintains the use of universal precautions and infection control measures that include hand hygiene.
  • Willingly provides coverage, stays beyond scheduled ending time when surgical schedule demands it, volunteering to cover time off or unexpected absences, and maintaining workflow.
  • Demonstrates knowledge in low level disinfection upon cleaning of equipment and turnover methodology of operating room suites.

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent

  • Must possess verbal and written skills to communicate effectively and courteously with a diverse group of professional and non-professional members of the health care team, patients, and family/significant others.

  • Obtain and maintain American Heart Association Basic Life Support certification
