Ophthalmic Technician - Peabody
Under the supervision of the Operations Manager, the Ophthalmic Technician assists ophthalmologists and optometrists with eye examinations. Duties include performing various vision tests, collecting medical data, monitoring and maintaining patient flow, scribing, patient education, and assisting physicians with various procedures; as well as assisting with various administrative duties within the Ophthalmology Department.

Job Description:

Essential Basic Duties & Responsibilities including but not limited to:
1)    Assists in chart preparation, encounter close out, telephone triage and other telephone calls, correspondence (patient, department, physician and pharmacy).
2)    Monitors and maintains physicians’ patient flow and scribe duties.
3)    Educates patients about ocular abnormalities and disease prevention.
4)    Fills out proper lab forms and gathers specimens for laboratory review.
5)    Performs patient pre and postop surgical instruction, including witnessing signed consent forms.
6)    Performs auto-refraction.
7)    Reviews all consent forms with patients prior to seeing physician and scribes as needed.
8)    Incorporates Lahey Hospital Guiding Principles, Mission Statement and Goals into daily activities.  
9)    Complies with all Lahey Hospital and Medical Center Policies. 
10)    Complies with behavioral expectations of the department and Lahey Hospital and Medical Center.
11)    Maintains courteous and effective interactions with colleagues and patients.
12)    Meets and exceeds the needs of our customers and consistently adheres to Customer Service standards.
13)    Participates in departmental and/or interdepartmental quality improvement activities.
14)    Performs all other duties as needed or directed to meet the needs of the department.
15)    Performs preliminary eye examination, including documentation of chief complaint, patient medical, ocular family, and social history.
16)    Performs various vision tests and procedures for  angle depth and AC clarity, corneal integrity, visual acuity, refractive error, color vision, central macula function, depth perception, corrective lens measurement, corneal surface curvature measurement, peripheral vision, pupillary response, basic ocular muscle evaluation, intraocular pressure
17)    Performs auxiliary tests, including PAM, interferometer, Heine’s, BAT, and exophthalmometry.
18)    Performs and documents preliminary slit lamp exam.
19)    Assists in laser and minor surgical procedures using proper sterile and aseptic techniques.
20)    Knowledge of basic optician skills such as troubleshooting patient spectacle complaints.
21)    Performs contact lens instruction, including I&R and cleaning soft and hard lenses.
22)    Demonstrates knowledge of ophthalmic pharmacological agents.
23)    Administers eye drops for dilated eye exams/laser treatments and diagnostic testing under physician direction.
24)    Performs pressure patching using appropriate aseptic technique under physician instruction. 
25)    Performs documents and follows set confidence levels for A-scan biometry and lens calculation for the purpose of measuring the length of the eye and appropriate intraocular lens for physician selection

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:  Minimum high school graduate or GED, or equivalent education and experience.  

Experience: 

Licensure, Certification, Registration:  None required; however, recommend completion of ophthalmic scribe course, ophthalmic assistant certification or ophthalmic technician certification through the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology, graduate of accredited optometric school or foreign graduate of medical school.
