Duties/Responsibilities:
Uses formal & informal data sources to proactively monitor & evaluate organizational risk with an emphasis on patient, employee, and visitor safety.
Support membership in the Academic Medical Center Patient Safety Organization (AMC PSO) as part of BID-P goals to improve quality and patient safety and maintain applicable peer review process and privilege. Submit documents to the Patient Safety Evaluation System at the direction of the Risk manager and BID-P Senior Director of Quality and Patient Safety/ Patient Safety Officer.
Promotes the BID-P Safety Event Reporting system including orientation and training of staff on the system.
Responsible for timely tracking and evaluating safety events/occurrence data. Triages reports, verifies and corrects data entry of information in safety reports and prepares periodic reports according to established criteria and applicable confidentiality and privilege of the work product.
Collaborates with the Patient Relations Manager in addressing patient/family/visitor complaints and grievances, escalating high level concerns. Generates a response to Health Plan grievances in collaboration with providers and Practice Managers.
Responsible for consulting on, leading and/or collaborating on issues such as patient terminations and the apology and disclosure process.
Conducts and/or collaborates on office practice risk assessments to identify opportunities for risk avoidance, prevention, transfer, reduction, and/or mitigation using various assessment tools.
Works with providers, staff and department leadership to recommend, develop and implement risk management techniques and strategies.
Develops, coordinates, and/or provides risk management and patient safety educational and orientation programs.
Participates in the development and implementation of clinical, operational and organizational policies and procedures that affect liability exposures across domains and/or improves patient safety.
Leads and/or participates in the review, investigation and analysis of adverse events, clinical and operational processes and peer review using site visits, interviews, conducting literature searches and conducting root cause analyses for high level safety events as deemed appropriate by the Risk manager and BID-P Senior Director of Quality and Patient Safety/ Patient Safety Officer within a Just Culture model.
Collaborates with operational and clinical leadership, recommends a course of action and develop strategies to maximize safety, effectiveness and efficiency while reducing medical error and risk. Works collaboratively to assure follow-through of the required action plan.
Presents risk management data to selected groups, identifying trends/patterns and areas requiring focused review.
May participate in various quality, safety and risk management work groups, and committees for program development, implementation and measurement of effectiveness.
Promotes, interprets, and assists in achieving compliance with applicable healthcare regulations & standards.
Participates in claims and complaint management process through early identification/reporting of potentially compensable events (PCE) and regulatory complaints. Liaison with defense counsel and their staff for information needs, scheduling and inquiries. May also include response to discovery requests & interrogatories.
Maintains collaborative relationships with key stakeholders to assure consistency of program application and alignment with organizational goals & objectives. May include RM integration across BILH.
Collaborates with the Risk Manager and as directed, the BILH Office of the General Counsel (OGC) to act as an organizational resource and consultant on issues related to managing risk, professional, general, & other insurable risk/liability & patient safety.
May participate in various research activities, grants and studies focused on patient safety, quality and professional liability.
Maintains knowledge of current professional industry, legislative, insurance, and regulatory trends and practices through participation in relevant professional organizations and attendance at conferences and other relevant continuing education programs.
Other responsibilities, tasks and/or special projects as needed.
Knowledge/Skills:
Ability to analyze complex clinical and organizational events.
Knowledge of regulatory requirements, experience facilitating regulatory investigations, and passion for working in a High Reliability Organization.
Strong knowledge of Risk Management principles typically acquired by ASHRM or CPHRM certification
Demonstrated knowledge and skills in Quality Improvement and Patient Safety.
Organizational skills to facilitate small task forces for problem investigation, development of corrective action plans, provide guidance and support to clinical and administrative leaders implement corrective action steps.
Interpersonal skills to most effectively communicate, collaborate and work through complex and sensitive situations with individuals and groups at all levels of hospital staff and administration
Ability to utilize common business and clinical software including but not limited to Microsoft office, google, Expanse, RL, etc.
High level skills in oral and written communication.
Strong organizational and time management skills
Effective interpersonal and communication skills with demonstrated ability to interface and collaborate with administration, staff, clinical providers, and others.
Ability to work with highly sensitive and confidential information with appropriate knowledge and discretion
Ability to produce and analyze data and communicate results
Effective public speaking/presentation and teaching skills
Training, experience and/or demonstrated understanding of improvement methodology such as root cause analysis and FMEA analysis.

Education/Experience Required:
Bachelor’s Degree with a Clinical Healthcare Major
Master’s Degree preferred
Minimum two years of experience in risk management and/or patient safety.
Minimum of (2) years clinical (acute care/ambulatory/office practice) experience preferred
Registration/Certification:
Certified Professional in Healthcare Risk Management (CPHRM) or Certified Professional in Patient Safety (CPPS) preferred
Current Nursing or other healthcare licensure preferred
Physical/Environmental Requirements
This job requires frequent bending, carrying, pulling, pushing, reaching, standing, stooping, walking and lifting over 10 lbs. There will be occasional need for climbing stairs, lifting in excess of 50 – 100 lbs and sitting. Constant use of hearing, sight and speech. Frequent use of smell and touch. Frequent keyboard and telephone use. Constant concentration and problem solving.
