Education:
Required: Associates Degree in Nuclear Medicine Technology from an accredited program
Preferred: Bachelors Degree in Nuclear Medicine Technology from an accredited program
Experience: N/A
Other Skills/Knowledge:
Required: For safety and quality reasons, must be able to read, write and communicate effectively in English with patients, visitors and fellow members of the hospital team
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS, CERTIFICATIONS:
Required: Registered as a Nuclear Medicine Technologist through the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (RT (NM)) or Nuclear Medicine Technologist Certification Board (NMTCB) and possess a valid Massachusetts Radiologic Technologist license or registry eligible
LIFE SUPPORT CERTIFICATION REQUIRED: Basic Life Support
POPULATION SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS: Infants, Children, Adolescents, Adults, Geriatrics
OTHER JOB REQUIREMENTS:
On-call: Rotation required
Schedule requirements: Required to rotate through day, evening, and weekend shifts based on department needs

- Reports to the Nuclear Medicine Supervisor
- Not responsible for supervising the work of others
JOB FUNCTIONS
As part of the Radiology team, following department protocols and in accordance with our Massachusetts Radioactive Materials License and ACR accreditation requirements, the Nuclear Medicine Technologist:
- Educates and informs patients and family members throughout the patients’ exam, utilizing compassion, empathy, and respect.
- Collaborates with a multi-disciplinary team, communicating effectively with the healthcare team utilizing established handoff procedures.
- Operates the department equipment to perform diagnostic and therapeutic nuclear medicine exams.
- Performs the necessary computer processing/analysis of exam data.
- Performs gamma camera quality control procedures.
- Prepares the appropriate radiopharmaceutical, assays the dose in the dose calibrator, and safely administers the dose to the patient, and disposes of the radioactive material properly.
- Follows the necessary radiation safety techniques and procedures designed to minimize exposure levels to patients, visitors, staff and themselves.
- Maintains records in accordance with the terms and conditions of our Massachusetts Radioactive Material License and other required documentation accurately, legibly and timely.
- Maintains a clean and safe work environment to enhance patient satisfaction and a culture of safety.
- Maintains adequate supplies and orders radioactive materials from vendors when needed.
- Assists in the daily operation of the department.
- Educates and informs patients and family members throughout the patients’ experience.
- Communicates effectively with the healthcare team utilizing established handoff procedures. Gives and accepts respectful feedback to enhance teamwork.
- Minimizes preventable harm events and consistently executes the infection control protocols. Incorporates the Culture of Safety tools in daily practice, adhering to quality and safety guidelines and communicating near-miss or potential risks.
- Coordinates work schedule with departmental supervisor to maintain adequate staffing levels to meet our patients’ and physicians’ needs.
- Responds to equipment issues timely to ensure optimum operations and equipment quality and long-term equipment maintenance and life.
- Participates in the maintenance of the accreditation process.
- Educates and informs patients and family members throughout the patients’ experience.
- Communicates effectively with the healthcare team utilizing established handoff procedures.
- Gives and accepts respectful feedback to enhance teamwork.
- Minimizes preventable harm events and consistently executes the infection control protocols. Incorporates the Culture of Safety tools in daily practice, adhering to quality and safety guidelines and communicating near-miss or potential risks.
PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS/CONDITIONS

- It is anticipated that the employee will have contact with blood or other potentially infectious materials while performing their job duties.
- Requires working in an area in which there is exposure to radiation.
