Job Description:

Winchester Hospital is a 5x Magnet designated, Top Massachusetts recognized 223-bed regional hospital that is the leading provider of comprehensive health care services in the northwest suburban Boston area. 

Contributes to the Hospital’s mission to care, heal and to excel in service to our community by promoting patient care continuity, enhancing patient throughput, and being responsible and accountable for the day to day operational decision making. Develops and promotes collaborative and collegial relationships with physicians and interdepartmental personnel in order to enhance patient care and patient flow.  This professional licensed staff utilizes the nursing process in the coordination and delivery of quality, safe clinical care and meets the highest level of professionalism consistent with a Magnet hospital

As part of the Patient Care Services team, this position:

Lead Role:

  • Works collaboratively with the nurse manager/director in the planning and implementing of patient care and performance improvement for a specific unit. 
  • Demonstrates clinical expertise in the assigned area and fosters a climate of clinical and professional excellence.
  • Promotes patient care continuity and enhances patient throughput.
  • Functions effectively in patient crisis situations.  Coordinates the triage, stabilization and/or transfer of patients to the appropriate level of care.  Supports staff, patients and others as workload increases and effectively redirects staff to increase productivity.
  • Responsible and accountable for the day to day operational decision making, and oversees the Registered Nurses and ancillary staff in the performance of their daily duties.
  • Develops and promotes collaborative and collegial relationships with physicians and interdepartmental personnel in order to enhance patient care and patient flow.
  • Mentors, coaches, and directs personnel to ensure provision of effective and safe patient care according to established standards of care. 
  • Ensures that patient care assignments are made and accomplished in accordance with the qualifications, skill level, and effectiveness of personnel as dictated by the complexity of patient care needs.
  • Leads and/or participates in effective hand-off communications, fostering a commitment to ensure respectful feedback and enhancing teamwork.
  • Responsible for ensuring that the care provided is in keeping with established standards of nursing care, infection control guidelines; and The Joint Commission’s National Patient Safety Goals, CMS, OSHA, Magnet and unit specific nursing professional organizations.
  • Actively participates in daily unit rounds and serves as the rounds leader to ensure that appropriately interdisciplinary involvement and care occurs. Collaborates and communicates with the physicians and unit staff to establish a daily plan of care for patients.
  • Fosters a culture of commitment to continual improvement of quality indicators and patient, staff and physician satisfaction goals.
  • Monitors the department’s daily operation enhancing fiscally prudent operational decisions.
  • Coordinates work schedule with departmental supervisor to provide coverage and maintain safe staffing levels and charge coverage.

Assumes the role of staff nurse when necessary:

  • Utilizes the nursing process to provide quality and safe patient care by identifying the specific needs of the patient, developing the plan of care with the patient to answer these needs, then implementing and evaluating the effects of that plan.
  • Establishes a therapeutic relationship with the patient, the patient's family and significant others by involving them in each step of the process and accommodates factors that may influence the provision of care.
  • Utilizes critical thinking skills to coordinate and direct the healthcare team in the implementation of the patient’s plan of care to ensure the best possible outcomes and patient/family experience.
  • Implement nursing interventions and treatments and administers medications ensuring the patient’s physical, emotional, cultural, and spiritual needs are met.
  • Performs all required documentation accurately, legibly and timely.
  • Appropriately follows the chain of command and adheres to hospital policies and procedures.
  • Educates and informs patients and family members throughout the patients’ experience from admission through discharge.
  • Minimizes preventable harm events and consistently executes the infection control protocols.  Incorporates the Culture of Safety tools in daily practice, adhering to quality and safety guidelines and communicating near-miss or potential risks.
  • Maintains a clean and safe work environment to enhance patient satisfaction and a culture of safety.
  • Responds to supply/equipment issues in a timely manner to ensure availability of equipment and to maximize its useful life.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

Required:

  • Graduate of a state approved and/or accredited RN program.
  • BSN or obtain BSN within 5 years of hire/promotion.

Preferred: Completed Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing

Experience:

Required: At least two years of work experience as a nurse and one year clinical experience relevant to the unit’s patient population

Other Skills/Knowledge:

Required:   

  • Demonstrated ability to function in both Charge and Preceptor roles
  • Basic computer skills
  • For safety and quality reasons, must be able to read, write and communicate effectively in English with patients, visitors and fellow members of the hospital team.

Preferred: Membership in professional nursing organization

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS, CERTIFICATIONS: 

Required: Massachusetts Registered Nurse License

Preferred: Certification in clinical specialty
