This educator position utilizes best practice and AORN guidelines to provide education, consultations, and clinical support to the multi-disciplinary care team. This licensed professional position will have an impact on quality and safety, patient satisfaction, and physician alignment by developing individual nurses and changing clinical practice.

Job Description:

QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

Required: Bachelors degree in Nursing, actively pursuing Masters Degree and must be obtained within 3 years of hire.

Preferred:  Masters degree upon hire

Experience:

Preferred: Work experience in Operating Room specialty and evidence of clinical specialization

Other Skills/Knowledge:

Required: Basic computer skills

Preferred: Membership in professional nursing organization, CNOR

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS, CERTIFICATIONS: 

Required: Massachusetts Registered Nurse License, Certifications in clinical specialty is required within 12 months.

Preferred: Certification in clinical specialty upon hire

LIFE SUPPORT CERTIFICATION REQUIRED:  Basic Life Support certification.

POPULATION SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS: Infant, children, adolescent (age 13 to 18), adult and geriatric.

OTHER JOB REQUIREMENTS:

Professional Commitment Requirements:  Keep abreast of developments in the field and/or licensure through continuing education, participation in professional organizations or a combination of both.

On-call:  N/A.

Schedule requirements:  Subject to change based upon needs of the business/department.

Travel requirements:   Supports both the hospital and the Ambulatory Surgical Center. 

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS:

  • Reports to Nurse Manager Operating Room.
  • Not responsible for supervising the work of others.  Provides performance feedback and verifies competencies as needed.
  • Leads teams and may direct the work of others in that capacity.

JOB FUNCTIONS

As part of the Surgical Services team, this position:

  • Identifies education needs of the operating room, develops and implements appropriate educational programs and evaluates the outcome of the educational programs.
  • Actively participate in the orientation of nurses, acting as a clinical and operational resource
  • Trains and orients new clinical staff performing functions in the OR. to AORN standards and Winchester Hospital policies and procedures in support of Nursing Staff Development’s and the nursing managers’ efforts to acclimate and train new and transferring staff members.
  • Conducts and facilitates the development of preceptors for new employees and the development of charge nurses.
  • Creates and participates in providing educational activities for maintaining staff clinical competence.  Coordinates service-line specific competencies with the appropriate Service Line Specialists.
  • Communicates and incorporates the Culture of Safety tools and preventable harm event concept into daily practice, adhering to quality and safety guidelines and communicating near-miss or potential risks.
  • Facilitates the nursing and Surgical Tech students OR clinical rotations and mentors and trains Perioperative Nursing Students. 
  • Supports nurses’ professional development efforts to include mentoring and coaching as the registered nurses pursue programs such as advanced degrees, PNAP and certifications.
  • Leads improvement teams and initiatives.
  • Participates in unit-based education, performance, improvement activities and departmental activities as needed
  • Serves as an expert clinical resource to other staff members.
  • Fosters an environment of best practices, using AORN guidelines and clinical expertise to improve patient outcomes and nursing competency throughout the unit.
  • Acts as the clinical expert in the patient’s healthcare team, providing consultation on the patient’s plan of care in order to optimize patient outcomes.
  • Demonstrates and fosters a commitment to hospital, department and unit performance improvement initiatives, goals and directives.  Supports Nursing Managers’ efforts to implement change and improve patient outcomes.  Adheres to quality and safety guidelines and communicates performance and safety concerns through the appropriate chain of command. 
  • Role models the Magnet standards of professional development and clinical practice.
  • Supports the rounding process. 
  • Responds to supply/equipment issues in a timely manner to ensure availability of equipment and to maximize its useful life.
  • Functions effectively in patient crisis situations and utilizes emergency resources. 
  • Fulfills all required documentation accurately, legibly and timely.
  • Communicate effectively with the healthcare team utilizing handoff and other communication procedures.  Give and accept respectful feedback to enhance teamwork and improve patient outcomes.
  • Appropriately follows the chain of command and adheres to hospital policies and procedures.
  • Maintains a clean and safe work environment to enhance patient satisfaction and a culture of safety.
